In order to fully understand the concept of a headless Content Management System (CMS), it is important to understand the traditional CMS. A traditional CMS approach houses all contents (Images, HTML, CSS) in one big database, and then the content is executed to a webpage. Traditional CMS' have not been able to adapt to this evolution of digital platforms because contents in a Traditional CMS' are organized in a webpage oriented framework, and this makes it impossible to execute the same content to other digital platforms.
This flaw of the traditional CMS can be resolved by implementing a headless CMS. This process involves separating or decoupling the body (content repository) from the head (the presentation layer) with the help of an API, making the CMS "headless". This headless CMS approach then allows you to produce and publish the same content to different digital platforms.
We are advocates for utilizing SharePoint Online as a headless CMS which allows content authoring in a single location and the ability to publish out content to another website. We recommend using an Azure hosted website as it is extremely cost effective and scalable. This headless CMS approach coupled with our Extranet Publisher product makes a very cohesive, easy to manage website that is fully hosted in the Microsoft ecosystem.
